A petition signed by more than one million Koreans for the repatriation of tens of thousands of South Korean abductees detained in North Korea was sent to the UN on the 11th. Bang U-yeong, CEO of Chosun Daily, submitted this petition to Doctor John P. Humphrey, the Director of the UN Human Rights Committee.
Along with Bang, Kim Yong-sik, the Korean Ambassador to the UN, was also there. Doctor Humphrey received the 102 pages of 1,019,080 signatures, as a proxy for U Thant UN Secretary General, who was hospitalized due to a stomach disorder.
